Tollefson House, Ashby, MN

This is a picture of the Tollefson house in Ashby, MN. Grandma's parents built this house after their family was grown. It was a duplex with Grandma and Grandpa Tollefson on one side and their daughter and family on the other. Buelah Casberg Haugejorden shared some of her stories with John and me while we were in Ashby visiting. She grew up on the farm and her brother Emory later had a dairy with many cows and lots of milk! He was so proud of his new barn and loved showing it off when we visited. Now, the barn stands empty since no one lives there now. His wife, Wilma, is in the nursing home in Ashby. They have two daughters about my age. It would be fun to look them up sometime and learn more about the Tollefsons.

This was a very large house it seems...were they wealthy or was this typical? Reminds me of a southern home I guess with the veranda like that! Is this house still standing?

Yes, the house is still standing. I think Emory's daughter, Carolyn, lives down the road in a house that she and her husband built. I believe that her husband farms the land. I wonder what will become of the house now that Palma is in the nursing home (did I call her Wilma in my last message?). I don't know that the Tollefson's were well off but it does appear, that for those times, the house must have been pretty nice. That is Great Grandma and Grandpa Tollefson sitting in front of the house. Their son-in-law, Nick Johnson, was a brick layer and helped build the house. I think his great granddaughter lives in Williston and works at the UND center. Lynn can fill us in since she knows her. I taped some of Buelah's stories and I will have to listen to them again. She said that when Grandma and Uncle Louie would visit they had they best times. She could hear them having fun into the late evening and they even swam!!! Can you picture that?

I cannot imagine it Gayle yet everyone in Minnesota is a duck and loves to swim so if they grew up here I am not completely surprised...however Grandma in a swimsuit?? HA! Would love to see those suits back then!
Gayle, you really have taken the time to learn so much and I am glad, as we will rely on your brain for the answers!

Karen is the great-granddaughter of Nick and Carrie? (Karine) Johnson. She is married to the head coach of the Teton Mens BB team at WSC. She is a very nice person but I don't get to see her much. I think she had even been out to the farm when she was young with her grandfather?

Do we have some distant relatives that would like to join this blog? If you find out, please have them get in touch with me. I have tried to get Jane Marie to join but she doesn't answer the emails...Gayle, have you heard from her at all? there is so much history and I have heard so little of it...thanks Lynn for filling in those details...are you like Gayle with a love for geneology?

I haven't had a reponse from Jane Marie either. I don't know that she is home. The last I heard, she was trying to get a job on the oil rigs off the coast of Norway. Janie, do you have the Hagen and Tollefson family history books that Arnold wrote? If not, I think Eva gave mom extra Hagen books. She may have some left.

Yes I do but when I do not know people I have trouble following the linage...while on the subject, does someone have an extra book of Vikings of the Praire as David doesn't have one and he was wanting one but they were terrible expensive on Amazon...I got Dad's book, and I guess Marlene and Gloria got them but David and I being younger did not so David was left out. Just wondering...
